Battle of hong kong
The Canadians' plan to defend Hong Kong
After the Pearl Harbor incident occurred, U.S joined the Allies war against the Axis. U.S, Canada and other Allied forces were trying to protect the Southeast Asian bases that were getting overrun by Japan. Canadian and other Allied troops were sent to defend Hong Kong, while getting drastically outnumbered by the Axis. The troops showed good resistance and even turned down two surrender offers. Japan was able to easily capture Hong Kong and the surviving Allied soldiers were taken to prisoner-of-war camps. About 260 Canadian soldiers died because of the brutal conditions in the camps and more died while doing slave work. The day that the soldiers were taken was named “Black Christmas”. The Canadian government later compensated the veterans in the late 1990s (Colyer, Cecillon, Draper & Hoogeveen, 2010).
